How did Upshot Dog Rescue start?
It started with the simple recognition that Puerto Rico has an estimated 500,000 stray and abandoned dogs on this small island. After moving to the island and witnessing the abuse, pain and suffering of so many dogs we decided that doing something - anything - was better than nothing. In the year of 2021 Upshot was active in helping over 150 dogs find amazing homes.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Lake Forest High School's New Media Department for producing this video of our team in action rescuing the dogs of Puerto Rico. Check out the video below to learn more about our amazing founder, Charlaine, and everything she has done for the abandoned dogs of Puerto rico.

In the United States, a 501(c)(3) organization is a type of non-profit organization that is exempt from federal income tax. To qualify as a 501(c)(3), an organization must meet certain requirements set by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), including being organized and operated exclusively for charitable, educational, religious, or scientific purposes. Donations made to 501(c)(3) organizations are tax-deductible for the donor.
In Puerto Rico, a 1101.01 organization is a non-profit corporation that is registered with the Department of State and operates for charitable, educational, or scientific purposes. These organizations are also exempt from paying income tax on their earnings, but they must meet certain requirements set by the Puerto Rico Treasury Department to maintain their tax-exempt status.
As a dog rescue non-profit organization, being registered as a 501(c)(3) or a 1101.01 organization can provide important benefits, such as tax-exempt status and the ability to receive tax-deductible donations from supporters.

As I reflect on the incredible journey that brought me from raising my kids in the serene town of Lake Forest, Illinois, to becoming an empty nester in the vibrant island of Puerto Rico, I am filled with both gratitude and a profound sense of purpose. The year 2020 marked a turning point in my life when I stumbled upon three precious souls in dire need of help, and it led me to embark on a mission close to my heart: rescuing the dogs of Puerto Rico.
The decision to move to Puerto Rico was not a random choice; it was born out of a desire for new adventures and an opportunity to create a change in my life. Little did I know that this change would be much more profound than I ever anticipated. One fateful day, while strolling along the beautiful beaches of Puerto Rico, I heard faint cries coming from a drain pipe. Intrigued and concerned, I followed the sound, only to discover three terrified and malnourished dogs huddled together, their eyes reflecting the pain and suffering they had endured.
This heart-wrenching encounter opened my eyes to the harsh reality faced by many stray dogs on the island. Witnessing their suffering first-hand stirred a deep sense of empathy within me, compelling me to take action. Thus, the mission statement "Rescue Dogs of Puerto Rico" was born - not out of dog-craziness, as some may assume, but out of an unwavering determination to alleviate the pain these innocent creatures endure.
The rescue efforts began with those three dogs, but it soon evolved into something more significant than I could have imagined. Through networking with local animal shelters, compassionate volunteers, and fellow animal lovers, I realized that I was not alone in my mission. Together, we formed a tight-knit community committed to making a difference in the lives of these abandoned and mistreated animals.
Each day has brought both challenges and triumphs. We face daunting obstacles in providing adequate shelter, medical care, and finding loving forever homes for these animals. Yet, the joy and fulfillment that comes from seeing a once broken and fearful dog wag its tail with newfound happiness is unparalleled.
To those who question the driving force behind my actions, let me be clear: it is not just about being "dog crazy." It is about confronting the reality of suffering and having the courage to do something about it. It is about nurturing empathy and compassion for all living beings. It is about making a tangible impact on the lives of those who cannot speak for themselves.
As I continue this journey, I urge you all to join hands in the pursuit of a world where no animal has to endure pain and suffering. Together, we can create a brighter future for the dogs of Puerto Rico and beyond, one filled with love, care, and the promise of a better tomorrow.
